Stress and the Skin!
Having a “facial” isn’t about luxury, these days skin care treatments (facials) are just that, treatments! During lockdown, no doubt at some point your stress levels were on the rise, some maybe more than others, especially if you were trying to work and juggle home schooling children. When our stress levels rise, our bodies produce cortisol. Cortisol is a hormone that has a detrimental effect on our body, and especially on our skin.
When cortisol levels go up, it prompts skin to produce excess sebum. This leads to oil in the pores and causes inflammation, leading to acne.
Cortisol can accelerate the ageing process as it breaks down elastin and collagen. It also has an impact on the skins ability to retain water. Trans-epidermal water loss increases, which means enzyme activity slows and cells become dehydrated.
Blood flow also increases when stress levels go up. This can lead to expanded capillaries, something that can cause permanent redness and inflammation. For those with rosacea, this is even more so apparent.
So what can you do about it? First step is to decrease your stress levels, take time out for yourself. This includes visiting your Skin Therapist for an hour of “You” time.
More importantly though, during this time your Skin Therapist will asses your skin and tailor make a specific treatment for exactly what your skin needs. This will include a specialized professional only enzyme treatment along with a blend of serums massaged into the skin with a penetrating mask to get your skin back on track.
